Devprayag – Confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers
Devprayag is one of the 5 confluences(Panch Prayag) of the river Alaknanda and the last one. The 4 other places of confluence are Vishnuprayag(Confluence of Dhauliganga with Alaknanda), Nandaprayag(Confluence of Nandakini with Alaknanda), Karnaprayag(Confluence of Pindar with Alaknanda) and Rudraprayag(Confluence of Mandakini with Alaknanda) in the descending flow sequence of their occurrence. Devprayag is the confluence of the two holy rivers Bhagirathi – the chief stream of the Ganges and Alaknanda to take the name Ganga, making it a unique pilgrimage. We can easily see the different colours of the two rivers before merging.
It is believed that Lord Rama and his father King Dasaratha performed penance here. Shri Raghunathji temple is claimed to have been erected here some 1000s of years ago on the hill while going to the Sangham ghat. Devprayag is the seat or winter home of pundits/priests from Badrinath Dham and Pitru Poojas are performed to the elders who are no more at the confluence and also Ganga pooja. It is located at a distance of around 70 kms from Rishikesh and 220 kms from Badrinath on the Rishikesh to Badrinath road. The drive is beautiful along the river Ganga passing through the hills. Now you should be able to answer Devprayag is the Confluence of which two rivers. You can check out about my full trip here.
