Medak Church
Medak Church, also called Church of South India – Diocese of Medak, Cathedral Pastorate-Medak is located in Medak around 100 kms from Hyderabad. The foundation for the Cathedral was laid in the year 1914 and completed in the year 1924. It is considered to be the best in South East Asia and the Architecture and Sculpture are Gothic in style. It can accommodate 5000 people and is one of the biggest in Asia.
The master builder was Rev Charles Walker Posnett. The main tower of this Cathedral is around 175 ft high with four pinnacles. The length and width of the cathedral is 200 ft and 100 ft respectively. The six different colours of mosaic tiles were imported from England. Italian masons were engaged to decorate the flooring.
There are 3 different magnificent stained windows depicting the 3 different phases in the life of Lord Jesus Christ and were designed by Sir Frank O Salisbury of England. The 3 windows were framed in different years, Ascension – 1927, Nativity – 1947 and the Crucifixion – 1958. There is ample parking space near the Cathedral. Also, it is very close to the Medak bus station and at a walkable distance. There are not many benches in the hall as is the case in other churches and there are two levels to sit. The cathedral recently completed 100 years. It is the single largest diocese in Asia and the second-largest in the world after the Vatican located in Medak town.
Medak Church timings : The church is open from 6 am to 6 pm every day.
