Cheruvugattu Jadala Ramalingeswara Swamy temple

Chervugattu Jadala Ramalingeswara Swamy Shiva Temple is located in Cheruvugattu village in Narketpally Mandal, Nalgonda District of Telangana State. It is around 16 km from Nalgonda town and 80 km from Hyderabad. It is around 6-8 kms from the Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway after taking right at Narketpalli while going from Hyderabad towards Vijayawada.

The temple is on a small hill and can be reached by both walk using around 365 steps and vehicle which takes you very close to the temple. The Garbhagruham(Main temple) is in between rocks and one has to pass through those to reach the temple which has the Siva lingam. There are also Three major ‘gundus’ (shiva lingas) spread around the main temple and there is one on top of a rock which can be reached by very small iron steps and elderly people may find it difficult to reach there. They charge Rs.10 per head to go up the rock. It was told that there were no steps of support on the rocks in the olden days and devotees used to still climb it. The priests there bless the devotees with a white tilak(bottu) and a pat on the back with a wooden piece.

There is a Parvati temple just below the hill and is also quite big. The facilities could have been maintained a bit better but overall a nice place to visit. There is a Jatara(Fair) held every year where Thousands and lakhs of pilgrims visit to witness the vibrant atmosphere.

It is believed that when Lord Parasuram was leaving to avenge Kartavirya’s death, Haiyas beheaded sage Jamadhagni. When Parasuram came to know about it, he came back to the Ashram and found that there were a total of twenty one injuries because of the arrows on the deceased body. Then Parasuram had sworn that he would slaughter the cruel Kshathriyas and then go back for performing penance on the Mahebadra Mountain. During the upsurge in evil warriors, Parasuram would return and kill them. Sage revolved around the earth 21 times to penalize and clear the earth from the evil Kshartiyas. He then built temples of deities that varied across different territories. He did so while circumambulating the earth 21 times. Whilst doing so, he installed 108, Pilgrimage worthy temples for devotees to perform penance and Cheruvugattu is one of them.

21st Feb – Evening 4 pm Gaja vahana gramotsavam in Cheruvugattu and Ellareddygudem villages and end of Brahmotsavalu for 2024
