Edupayala Vana Durga Bhavani Temple

Edupayala Temple or Edupayala Vana Durga Bhavani Temple is situated in Nagsanapalli village of Papannapet mandal in Medak district on the Hyderabad to Medak Highway. The location is a confluence of seven rivulets or streams into the Manjeera river and hence the name Edupayalu(Edu means seven and Payalu means streams). It is located in the lush green forest area and natural stone formations.

The Kanaka Durga Bhavani temple is in between the seven streams which are named after the seven sages(Saptarushis) Jamadagni, Aathreya, Kashyapa, Vishwamitra, Vasishta, Bharadwaja and Gowthama. Out of these three streams(vashishta, aathreya and kashyapa)flow in front of the temple and four( (jamadaagni, vishwamitra, gowthama and bharadwaja)) from the back. It is full of water in the rainy season and hence would make a good spectacle during this time.

According to the legend, King Parikshit (the grandson of Arjuna) performed Sarpayaga to get rid of a curse. When Garuda was taking the snakes used in the Yaga, their blood is said to have fallen at seven different places and those became streams. The temple was built in 12th Century CE.

There is 3 day Edupayala jatara(fair) celebrated every year at Edupayala temple during the Siva Ratri festival and is considered the 2nd biggest after Medaram jatara. The jatara begins on Sivarathri day by offering bonam to goddess Vana Durga Bhavani and is followed by Bandi Utsavam where hundreds of decorated bullock carts from surrounding villages go around the temple and ends with the Rathothsavam on the 3rd day. The Dasara Navarathi festival is also celebrated in a big way and also Magam Amavasya. Temporary tents are put up during the jatara and lakhs of pilgrims visit during this time.

There other small temples on the hillock of the Edupayala temple like the Naguala Yellamma temple, Parasurama temple and Muni putta temple for which one needs to trek a bit. At the Nagula Yellamma temple, there is a belief that if we place five stones, one on top of the other and wish for something, that wish is fullfilled.
